When repairing plaster walls, you will need joint-compound or spackling compound and sandpaper

Drywall-joint compound can be used in repairing plaster walls. They must be repaired because no matter how small the damaged area may be, it will always show through a new coat of paint. If the paint on the plaster has bubbled, wrinkled or cracked, it will have to be stripped.

Loose paint or plaster can be removed with a putty knife. These tools are also useful for scraping peeling paint; they come in sizes from one inch wide to more than six inches wide. If walls are new or fairly smooth, the prepping should go quickly.

Most of the work in painting and wallpapering involves plaster wall repair and drywall. Filling nail holes is one of the steps toward a perfect paint job. Drywall can develop cracks, especially at joints and corners. Remove all loose and damage material back to a sound edge.

Normal expansion and contraction of a house can cause some wallboard nails to pop out over time. These days, metal or fiberglass patch kits simplify the repair of small holes in plaster walls. If you do sand, brush off the dust before applying paint.

Sometimes a sound wall may have so many small flaws that repair plaster walls seems overwhelming. A large crack in plaster walls could be a major repair job. In fact, it takes just a few hours of work, spread over a day or two. You can cover such walls with pintable wallpaper or wall liners.

Attend to nicks, dents, cracks, and spaces between walls and molding; these problems make up the major repairs before painting walls. The combination of joint-compound and fiberglass tape products gives the strongest, longest-lasting repair.
