Paint roller technique can give wall surfaces many different patterns and textures

You should be careful to load the roller with the correct amount of paint. To spread the paint, select a good quality, sturdy roller frame and appropriate sleeves for the job. Overloading a roller is a common mistake.

Roller spread paint so quickly and easily that they have become the preferred tool for painting large, flat surfaces. If you are working on a smooth surface, use a roller with a short pile; for moderately textured surfaces, one with a medium pile; and for areas with rough, undulating surfaces, one with long pile.

To be well equipped for painting projects, it's good to have two 9-in rollers, for large painting projects where you'll have a helper and one 4-in roller for narrow areas. Most room painting techniques will require both a roller and a paintbrush. Let the roller do the work; use only enough pressure to get the paint on the wall.

Twisting the roller handle slightly in the direction you are working, usually to the right, helps eliminates lines. An extension handle can provide additional leverage when running the roller across a wall surface.
