Drywall primer paint is used on bare material such as drywall, plaster, and wood

Drywall primer paint is a sealing agent applied to a surface to prevent any subsequent paint coat being absorbed or rejected by it. When repairs or sanding exposes raw wood, a primer-sealer compatible with the topcoat provides the base paint needed for a good bond.

Painting over stained or varnished trim, use a stain killing, bonding primer. Today nearly every manufacturer makes primers compatible with their paints for a good bond and successful results.

Interior primer paint can be tinted, and tinting will ensure good coverage with the finish coat. Some primers are best suited for use on drywall or plaster, while other are best on bare wood or trim that has been stained or varnished.

Previously painted surfaces do not need to be primed, but although they usually have very little pigment, these products help cover flaws and ensure that the paint adheres well to the surface.

Wood primer paint is available in both water-based and oil-based varieties. Different types are recommended for different jobs. With few exceptions, walls and other surfaces require a coat of primer to promote a clean, smooth finish when the paint is applied.

If you are painting a new plaster wall, seal the surface with a vinyl acrylic wall primer, and let dry thoroughly before painting.
